Description

Mount Larkins is a grade 1 peak located near Glenorchy at the heads of Lake Wakatipu. The route offers great views over Glenorchy, lake Wakatipu, and the Earnslaw Massif. This trip is open to people who have completed Snowcraft 1 or equivalent.

We will take the DOC Judah track up to Heather Jock Hut (approx 3hours) which passes a few old historic huts, we will then carry onto Kelly Hut where I propose we camp, via Mt Alaska or a sidle around depending on how people are feeling.

Please note Kelly Hut is a private hut, which can be booked but I will leave it to individuals to sort if they wish(45pp I think). Camping is free.

A push for the summit on the Sunday (10th) returning via the same ridgeline to the DOC track out.

Getting There

The track head is at the Mount Judah Recreational trails on google maps. The maps have it at approx a 4.5 hour drive from Dunedin. If there are any Qtown and central folk joining it will be a much shorter drive.

I will be leaving Dunedin early Saturday morning aiming to be at the track head for 11-1130. Once numbers are a bit more solid, carpooling will be proposed.

If some people from Dunedin want to head out on the Friday and meet us along the way, please let me know.

What to Expect

We will take the DOC Judah track up to Heather Jock Hut (approx 3hours) which passes a few old historic huts, we will then carry onto Kelly Hut where I propose we camp, via Mt Alaska or a sidle around depending on how people are feeling.

A push for the summit on the Sunday (10th) returning via the same ridgeline to the DOC track out.

I would expect 6-7 hour day Saturday and 7-9 for Sunday.

Expect any and all mountain conditions: rain, wind, sun, fun. If conditions are not favourable we will aim to push the trip or choose another objective somewhere nicer.

Possible Hazards

Wet conditions, rockfall, ice, trips, uneven ground, KEAs.

Gear

Camping gear: tent, sleeping bag, cooker, 2 days food, appropriate alpine clothing

Technical gear: Ice axe (single, walking), Crampons, Helmet

I will also bring a PLB and first aid kit, but would be good if there are a few others as well.
