Description

Rock climbing and bouldering trip to Castle Hill, Canterbury.

Castle Hill is famous for excellent bouldering from V0 through to super hard unfinished projects. It also has a range of bolted routes from Grade 14 up to 29. There is definitely something for everyone and it's quite different to anything you will find around Dunedin so totally worth the drive.
Even if you are not normally a boulderer, the rock is so good and the setting so beautiful it will have you converted!
Check out climbnz or castlehillbasin for more info on crags/routes/bouldering areas.

The aim is to leave Dunedin by 5pm on Friday night (8th March) to drive to Mistletoe Flats campsite (approx. 5.5 hr drive). Climb all day Saturday and leave around 12pm Sunday (10th March) to be back in Dunedin by 5:30pm.
The trip leader may decide to cancel or reschedule the trip at short notice depending on weather and conditions. The call will be made on the Thursday before and you will be contacted via email or TXT.

Getting There

We will carpool from Dunedin leaving at 5pm on Friday 8th March and returning about 5:30pm on Sunday 10th March.
Expect to pay around $50 - 60 per person for fuel if sharing a ride with 4 people per car.

What to Expect

This area has a huge range of climbs and problems for people of all abilities but a basic level of climbing/bouldering skills will be required and the ability to take responsibility for your own safety as this is not a training course or instructed trip. However, there will be some experienced club members around to give advice and tips if needed.

We plan to camp at Mistletoe Flats DOC campsite which is about a 10-15 min drive from the main crags/bouldering areas. Tucked away in an area of beech forest, this is a nice wee standard campsite (cost $8 per night per adult) with basic toilet, water and tent sites along with a day shelter.

Possible Hazards

Gear

Accommodation:
Camping at Mistletoe Flats DOC campsite. You will need to bring all normal camping gear such as tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag/bedding, towel, toiletries, gas cooker, pots/cutlery ect., food, outdoor clothing and climbing gear.

Food: We plan to cook a shared meal on Saturday night, the trip leader will delegate items for you to contribute. Dinner on Friday night is up to you as we will arrive late at campsite. You are responsible for bringing your own food for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches and snacks for 2 days.

Climbing gear:

Basic requirements are climbing shoes for bouldering. If you have a bouldering mat please let me know as we will try and borrow/hire enough to ensure safe bouldering for the group. Everyone is responsible for sourcing their own climbing gear but we will bring a couple of club ropes and a few anchor set-ups. Please note that it is club policy for everyone on trip to wear climbing helmets if doing bolted sport or trad routes. If you need to rent climbing gear please contact Eve as soon as possible so that you can book what you require.   Otago has a limited range of rock climbing gear which is free for members to use or $5 per day for non-members.

Other gear:
Trip leaders will bring a PLB & First Aid kit but please ensure you are personally well prepared for a weekend of camping and spending all day in the outdoors including warm clothing and rain gear as it is a mountain type environment.
