Description
The primary purpose of this trip is to have a mid winter Xmas / Matariki feast at Homer Hut with fellow climbers. In addition if the weather and conditions are OK we can do some climbing. The trip to Gertrude Saddle and Barrier Knob are worth the effort.Homer Hut is a base hut that can sleep 30. The cost per night for members is $20. Please pay your hut fees directly to NZAC HQ via the NZAC website. The hut has gas cookers, pots, pans, plates, cutlery etc.
The feast will be on the Saturday night and it will be a pot luck meal. You should bring your own liquid refreshments. You should bring your own food for all other meals.
We will have Secret Santa all gifts must be second hand or home made.
Getting There
We will travel by private car with passengers sharing the fuel cost. Cars will need to carry snow chains.It is a five hour drive form Dunedin to Homer. We will leave Dunedin on the Thursday evening or Friday morning depending on weather and peoples aspirations. We will return on Sunday afternoon
What to Expect
A good time with good company.We have invited the Southland and Central Otago sections to join us so it will be an opportunity to make new connections and catch up with old friends.
Possible Hazards
Winter driving conditions, snow and ice.Avalanches could be possible. If leaving the hut usual mountain hazards - rock fall, falls on steep slopes, hyperthermia, misuse of crampons.
Gear
Bring warm clothes. If you plan on a climb the minimum gear you will need is ice-axe, crampons and helmet.We will have the two club PLBs at the event for climbing parties to use.
