Description
Old Man Range - Ski touring Trip with the objective of Nicholson hut.The
tour is easy and requires a moderate level of fitness and off piste ski ability. Back-up day would be Sunday the 4th if weather looks more favorable.
Getting There
Day trip from Dunedin - car pool on 4WD up Symes road. SUV/legacy type of 4WD are fine, chains might be required and recommended.
Depending on snow level and road condition there might a short walk before can put the skis on.
What to Expect
It suits beginners who have had previous touring experience and want to move further away into remote places.
Will be leaving Dunedin at 6.30am; road end 10am; back at the car 4pm; Dunedin around 6pm.
Possible Hazards
Slippery road.
The Old Man range is very exposed to the weather.
The terrain is simple but still has objective hazards.
Gear
Minimal Gear required is:- ski touring/split boarding set up
- avalanche kit: digital transceiver, shovel and probe
- lunch and drinks
Avalanche Kits are available for Hire through the NZAC section in Dunedin
at Hunting&Fishing and others outlets in Queesntown (Small planet) and Wanaka (MT
Outdoors).
