No one wants to abseil into gorse. Let's clean it up!

Description

A day of crag maintenance and climbing at Cutting Crag above Doctor's Point.  Gorse is encroaching on the path and at the base of the climbs and needs to be cleared out, so we will spend a few hours removing gorse and then spend the rest of the day climbing.  If you've never been to Cutting Crag before, it's one of the sunniest crags in Dunedin - perfect for winter climbing!

Getting There

We will meet at the usual spot next to Logan Park on Union Street (link) and then carpool to the Mapotahi carpark.  Plan on leaving Logan Park at 9:30 am.  You can also meet us at the Mapotahi carpark at 10 am if you prefer.

Please note: it is recommended that you avoid accessing Cutting Crag via White Road and only use the Mapotahi access, which involves much less walking along the train tracks.  Cutting Crag is on KiwiRail property, and they can shut down access to the crag whenever and for whatever reason they like, so it is best to avoid being seen.

What to Expect

Expect lots of gorse removal and some climbing.  We'll be out most of the day, so bring food and drink and warm clothes.  The climbs at Cutting Crag range from 16 to 21, so you should be comfortable climbing in that range.

Possible Hazards

Gear

Bring along saws, loppers, and clippers to remove gorse and some gloves because the stuff is really prickly.

You will want standard sport climbing gear (and maybe a few pieces of trad gear for a couple of climbs if you have it).  Helmets are MANDATORY, as the rock in the Doctor's Point area can be quite loose.
